The hard part is over! You have officially completed the home buying process and you are starting to get everything together for the big move. Before you start packing boxes and picking out paint colors, you want to take some time to make sure you are set up for success with your new home.
Here’s what you need to do after you purchase your new home:
1. Change the Locks/Pins
First thing is first once you get those keys – change the locks and any alarm codes, gate codes, or garage codes. You never know what could happen, and you want to ensure you are secure in your new home after you sign.
2. Set Up Your Utilities
After you sign the contracts, get started with setting up your utilities. You don’t want the home to sit without air conditioning or water especially in the heat of summer. As soon as you close, start working on securing those utilities for your new home. This will help make for a smooth (and cool!) move in process.
3. Do a Deep Clean
We recommend before moving in your items to do a deep clean of the home. Some sellers are kind and make sure to do so before the house goes on the market, but other times, they do not. Hire a cleaner or take the time to tackle your home with your friends and family for a cleaning party. No one wants to move into a dirty home!
4. Change Your Address
Take the time to review your banking address, license, and mail and make the necessary changes to transfer everything over to your new address. If you are especially moving from a rented space, you definitely don’t want your mail getting lost. Get this squared away ahead of time so you don’t forget!
5. Take a Minute
You just bought a home…this is HUGE! Take a minute to relish in the excitement and to relax. Home ownership is a huge undertaking, and you will have a lot on your plate moving forward, so take this time to enjoy this sliver of peace and excitement.
