Moving with pets can prove to be challenging and stressful for all parties involved. You want your pet to feel safe and cared for, but you also have tons of things to complete on your to-do list. How does one manage both?
Have you ever heard the phrase, “I work hard so my dog has a better life”? Well, we are big pet lovers here at BSR Realty Group, and we believe all pets should be considered during the moving process. Because Fido deserves his dream home too!
If you’re moving in the new year, and you’re not sure how to successfully move with pets, have no fear – BSR Realty Group is here! Here are five tips for moving with pets:
1. Have a Plan
The worst thing you can do is forget to plan when it comes to your pets. Prep an overnight bag, coordinate a dog sitter or kennel and make sure you have a plan in place for the day of the move. You’ll want to ensure that your pet is cared for and out of the way so that they don’t interfere with the moving day chaos. By having your friend or family dog-sit, or by securing a spot at the kennel, your sweet fluffy friend will be all taken care of for the day, so you don’t have to worry about what they are doing (or what they are getting into!)
2. Secure A Vet
If you’re moving to a new city or neighborhood, make sure you have a vet on standby. Moving can be stressful for your pet and cause unknown anxiety, so make sure you have a vet secured ahead of time to prepare if the worst-case scenario occurs.
3. Pay Attention
When transporting your pet, pay attention to how they are acting. If they are more stressed than usual, bring a blanket or one of your t-shirts to keep them at ease – plus, the smell of your items will be comforting and helpful during the transition. Make sure to also keep them on a leash for the first few days as they might be curious and want to explore their new neighborhood. Keep them at bay, take them for walks, and make sure to be cognizant of keeping doors shut and locked. As much as they want to explore their new neighborhood, you want to avoid them escaping to do so.
4. Pack Efficiently
Make a separate bag just for your pet and keep it close during the move. Include their favorite treats, toys, dog food, medicine, and bowls for easy access. It’s better to have a separate bag just for them as your home will be inundated with boxes, furniture, and other bags. Make sure this doggie bag is easily accessible during moving so that you can find it immediately without diving through items to find your pet’s food for their meals. We can’t have your fur baby going hungry!
5. Keep Their Schedule (And the Cuddles!)
Moving is chaotic, but try to keep to your pet’s schedule as you settle in. Make sure they are walked and fed at their preferred time. Take a break from unpacking to play fetch. Always feed them at their desired time. Much like children, pets stick to a rigorous schedule. By keeping their schedule in order, it will ensure a better transition as they get to know their new home. And don’t skimp on the cuddles! They might be stressed and anxious and will need lots of love from their favorite person – you!
